This collection features a selection of digital photographs taken in the 2010s by Dr. Naoko Fukami, who served as the Director of the JSPS Cairo Research Station until fiscal year 2024.
As an expert in the history of Islamic architecture, Dr. Fukami has extensively documented archaeological sites in Historic Cairo through her involvement in various preservation projects. This collection serves as the foundational visual record for the “Database of Historical Monuments in Islamic Cairo.” It provides comprehensive coverage of the 2010s condition of these sites, focusing primarily on monuments registered with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (formerly the Supreme Council of Antiquities).

This collection features photographs taken by Dr. Kazuhiro Arai, currently a Professor at the Faculty of Business and Commerce, Keio University, during his stay in Cairo in the summer of 1994.
Earlier that year, while studying at the University of Michigan, Dr. Arai took a course on “Islamic Architecture” which sparked his enduring interest in the historical structures of Cairo. Originally captured on reversal film (Kodachrome 64 and Ektachrome 100) and subsequently digitized, these photographs serve as a valuable visual record of Cairene Islamic architecture in the mid-1990s. Notably, they document several buildings, including the Mosque of al-Zahir Baybars, prior to the extensive modern renovations they have since undergone.
